GDV Study — Mobile Phone EMF Alters Human Biofield; Aires and Other Protective Devices Assessed
Institution: Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Physical Culture
Method: Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) — 10-finger bioelectrography
Subjects: 15 healthy female volunteers, age 20–30
Phones tested: Panasonic EB-G60 and Sony Ericsson models
Study Design
Fifteen healthy female volunteers (age 20–30) participated. GDV measurements of all 10 fingers were taken at 8 time points per subject — 800 images total — across the following conditions:
- Three initial baseline measurements (5-minute intervals)
- During mobile phone use — at 5 minutes (tel 5) and 10 minutes (tel 10)
- 10 minutes after phone turned off (recovery)
- During mobile phone use with Aires device attached — at 5 minutes (tel Aires 5) and 10 minutes (tel Aires 10)
GDV images were processed for two parameters: Area (number of exposed pixels after noise processing) and Intensity (averaged image intensity, 0–255 scale). Energy field diagrams based on Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian mapping were also generated.
Key Findings
Mobile phone use produced measurable changes in GDV parameters during exposure. These changes were partially or fully attenuated when the Aires device was attached to the phone. The study also compared the Aires device against other protective devices available on the market at the time.
Historical Context
This study was conducted at the Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Physical Culture, which has a tradition of studying bioelectrographic responses to environmental stressors in athletes and healthy volunteers. It represents an early systematic attempt to compare multiple EMF protective devices using GDV methodology, at a time when few studies of this type existed.
