Salford 2003: How Two Hours of Cell Phone Radiation Damaged the Blood-Brain Barrier in Rats

Leif Salford’s team at Lund University exposed rats to cell phone radiation at SAR levels within the range of human exposure and found albumin leakage across the blood-brain barrier — the protective membrane that prevents toxins, pathogens, and molecules from entering brain tissue. The leakage appeared at exposure levels below the thermal threshold. Salford also found darkly stained, damaged neurons at 28 and 50 days post-exposure. The study has been featured by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Joe Rogan as one of the most concerning pieces of EMF research.

Volkow 2011: The JAMA Randomized Controlled Study That Proved Cell Phones Alter Brain Metabolism

Nora Volkow (then director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse) published a randomized crossover study in JAMA. Participants had phones placed against both ears simultaneously — one on, one off. Using PET scanning to measure glucose metabolism, the brain region closest to the active antenna showed a statistically significant 7% increase in metabolic activity. Johansson 2006: The Karolinska Research That Found Biological Markers in People with EMF Sensitivity

Olle Johansson at the Karolinska Institute — one of the world’s leading medical research institutions — examined skin biopsy samples from individuals reporting electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). The finding: objective, measurable biological differences in mast cell density, serotonin content, and immunological markers compared to non-sensitive controls. This matters because EHS is often dismissed as psychosomatic; Johansson’s data found actual tissue-level differences, not self-reported perception differences.

What These Three Studies Have in Common

Salford, Volkow, and Johansson each approached the brain/EMF question from a completely different angle: animal structural biology, human metabolic imaging, and immunological biomarkers respectively. None of the findings required tissue heating. All found measurable biological effects at or below legal exposure levels.

The Volkow study is particularly significant because it used the gold standard randomized controlled design, published in the world’s most cited medical journal, and still found a clear effect. If the null hypothesis were true — if cell phones had no effect on brain biology — that study should have returned a null result. It did not.
