Parents who want to protect their children from school WiFi exposure quickly run into the same wall: you can't block or shield a mandatory school environment. The router isn't yours to turn off. The Chromebooks aren't optional. So the question becomes more specific: what does the research on WiFi 6 actually show, and what interventions are actually available when you can't control the infrastructure? WiFi 6 (802.11ax) has been rolling out in schools since 2023-2024, marketed on two genuine advantages: faster speeds and the ability to handle more devices simultaneously without degradation. For school districts deploying 1:1 Chromebook programs, the ability to maintain performance with 30+ devices per classroom is a real operational benefit.
What the procurement conversations typically do not include: the 2025 SFERA study is the first controlled research specifically examining WiFi 6 biological effects — and its findings are worth understanding before assuming the upgrade is biologically neutral.
Independent research — presented separately from the Aires research

What Independent Research Shows
IARC/WHO — 2011: The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as a Group 2B carcinogen — "possibly carcinogenic to humans" — based on review by 31 scientists from 14 countries. France: National law required WiFi disabled in elementary schools when not in active use (2015). National law banned phones in schools for students under 15 (2018).

The precautionary logic
None of these governments declared WiFi dangerous. All applied the precautionary principle to children's developing environments — when the cost of caution is low and the potential cost of being wrong is high, waiting for definitive regulatory proof is itself a policy choice.
What the SFERA 2025 Study Found
The SFERA (Scientific Foundation for Electromagnetic Research and Assessment) 2025 study examined blood parameters in adult subjects following controlled WiFi 6 exposure at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, compared to sham exposure under double-blind conditions. The findings included measurable changes in several blood parameters — including markers associated with immune function and inflammatory response — following 2 hours of exposure at levels consistent with typical school classroom deployment.
This is a single study, and the authors appropriately note that replication is needed. What it establishes: WiFi 6 is not biologically inert at normal classroom exposure levels, and the assumption that regulatory compliance equals biological safety does not hold for this technology any more than it did for prior WiFi generations.

Why WiFi 6 Deserves Specific Research Attention
WiFi 6 is not simply WiFi 5 with a speed upgrade. The technology introduces several changes that are relevant to biological exposure assessment:
OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access): WiFi 6 uses OFDMA to serve multiple devices simultaneously on the same channel. This changes the signal structure — the waveform characteristics — relative to prior WiFi generations. Prior research on WiFi biological effects was conducted on earlier waveform structures. Whether findings transfer to OFDMA waveforms is an open research question.
Higher device density: The operational advantage of WiFi 6 — serving more devices per access point without performance degradation — means that classrooms deploying WiFi 6 will typically operate with higher device density than WiFi 5 classrooms. Higher device density means higher aggregate electromagnetic field density in the classroom environment.
6 GHz band expansion: WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 (beginning to appear in school deployments) add the 6 GHz band. Research on biological effects of 6 GHz exposure is substantially thinner than at 2.4 and 5 GHz.
The Regulatory Gap
Current FCC and ICNIRP exposure guidelines for WiFi were established based on thermal (heating) effects of radiofrequency radiation. They do not account for non-thermal biological effects — effects that occur at sub-thermal exposure levels through mechanisms other than tissue heating.
The Dyuzhikova 2018 study (chromosomal aberrations in schoolchildren, 1.9% to 9.8% over an academic year in a WiFi-equipped classroom), the hippocampal 2017 research (structural changes in developing hippocampal tissue), and the SFERA 2025 findings all document effects at exposure levels well within regulatory limits.
