The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has repeatedly emphasized the importance of governments’ commitment to protecting the environment and environmental health. The dangers of electromagnetic fields in general, particularly the harmful effects of mobile phone radiation and WiFi radiation effects are the subject of ongoing research and a significant amount of public controversy. Do the relatively low frequency of electromagnetic fields surrounding power lines and electrical devices cause us harm?

Every person is now exposed in varying degrees to electromagnetic fields and WiFi radiation effects, the levels of which will continue to increase as technology advances. According to the World Health Organization, anxiety and speculation are spreading about possible electromagnetic radiation effects. Electromagnetic fields of all frequencies are one of the most common and fastest growing influences on our environment. Non-ionising frequencies, even at extremely low levels below the official threshold values, appear to create the potential for harmful biological effects on plants, insects, animals, and humans.

The Assembly strongly recommends that the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle be applied, covering both thermal and athermic or biological electromagnetic radiation effects. Despite recommendations, declarations, statutory and legislative advances, and calls for the respect of ALARA, effective preventive measures have been systematically delayed. Waiting for high levels of scientific and clinical proof before taking action to prevent known risks can lead to high health and economic costs, as with asbestos, leaded petrol, and tobacco.

Moreover, the Assembly notes that the dangers of electromagnetic fields or waves and their potential consequences for health and the environment clearly occur in tandem with other ongoing issues, such as the licensing of medications, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and GMOs. The bottom line here is that in order to inspire an appropriate focus on electromagnetic radiation, it is necessary to have the credibility of scientific expertise vouching for the facts, and this is crucial if we wish to accomplish a transparent and balanced assessment of the harmful effects of mobile phone radiation and other
